<image:title>Food Systems - The food system has been defined as…</image:title>
<image:caption>“an interconnected web of activities, resources and people that extends across all domains involved in providing human nourishment and sustaining health, including production, processing, packaging, distribution, marketing, consumption and disposal of food. The organization of food systems reflects and responds to social, cultural, political, economic, health and environmental conditions and can be identified at multiple scales, from a household kitchen to a city, county, state or nation.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Systems - First, a Food System model might consider the basic food system elements…</image:title>
<image:caption>From production to processing and distribution, these components contribute to the basal functioning of the system- how we get our food from the farm to our plates. In our model, many of these components have their own interest groups.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Systems - Next, consider those elements and how they might interact with other factors…</image:title>
<image:caption>Such as the health of people and the environment, the economy, waste and resource recovery, poverty, and other environmental, social, and economic factors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Food Systems - Consider what already exists…</image:title>
<image:caption>Additionally, we might also consider the facets of the system that can be influenced by local or regional policies- part of our enabling environment or “what is so”, also referred to as our “Sphere of Influence”. These are the conditions that, in coalition and collaboration, we are trying to disrupt, evolve or innovate.</image:caption>

<image:title>Meeting Recordings - Food Security Interest Group A Presentation and Discussion with Nevin Cohen. Friday, February 11, 2022</image:title>
<image:caption>On Friday, February 11, the Hudson Valley Food System Coalition Food Security Interest Group gathered on Zoom for a presentation and discussion with Nevin Cohen on the creation of a prototype food environment equity dashboard for New York City (FEED-NYC). The aim is to create a tool to advance "the understanding of the impacts of smart technologies in addressing food system inequality, by aggregating, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing food systems equity data; testing novel methods of disaggregating, combining, and mapping data to measure food insecurity vulnerabilities; developing use cases that illustrate the potential social and political effects of an equity-focused data dashboard; and evaluating the process of co-producing FEED-NYC and anticipated uses of the dashboard by municipal officials, service providers, and community stakeholders.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wednesday, June 16, 2021 We are excited to introduce you to our new partners from the CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute as they join us to present their ongoing research on regional food equity planning. As part of their presentation, the CUNY team, in partnership with the East End Food Institute, will share insights and findings from a jointly developed food planning process piloted in the East End of Long Island (see their recent April 2021 report "Negotiating Conflict and Consensus Toward a Shared Food Future: Growing, Selling, Buying, and Eating Food on the East End of Long Island”). The presentation will be followed by a discussion about possible next steps for the project and the ways in which the process can be applied to our food system in a way that benefits the needs of all who grow, distribute, serve, and eat food in the Hudson Valley.</image:caption>
